Preview: Post Canonization Commentary

Matt Swaim and I will wrap up our Son Rise Morning Show Santo Subito! series on Monday, October 14, at the usual time (7:50 a.m. Eastern/6:50 am. Central), commenting on the canonization ceremony on Sunday, October 13.

For English speaking audiences, Newman's canonization is the headliner. In a search for "canonizations October 13 2019", his name dominates the story, as in the Vatican News article: "Pope to canonize Newman and four others on 13 October". Some headlines, like this one from Zenit.org, relegate the other four to be canonized to the subhead: "Cardinal Newman to be Canonized October 13/Four Others Also to Become Saints".

The four others are women:

Sister Mariam Thresia of India is the founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family. So in India, her canonization is "a source of pride" according to The Times of India!

Italian Sister Giuseppina Vannini is the founder (or foundress) of the Daughters of Saint Camillus.

Brazilian Sister Dulce Lopes Pontes of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God. The Rio Times featured her in the announcement of the canonization.

Marguerite Bays of Switzerland, of the Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi. This SwissInfo website highlights her: "Swiss seamstress Marguerite Bays to become a saint".

The banners are up at St. Peter's basilica, with Newman in the center and two of the women on either side. And here's a link to another view (I'm not sure of the copyright on these photos, so I'm linking to a Facebook post). The official portrait of Newman is not of him as a Cardinal, like The Catholic Herald cover above, but of him as an Oratorian.

So I'll be tuned in Sunday to hear about the canonization and Matt Swaim and I will talk about it Monday.
