Eighth Day Books is hosting a “G.K. Chesterton Christmas” from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Eighth Day Books, 2838 E. Douglas Ave.
The local Chesterton society meets there the third Friday of most months, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., although everyone is welcome to join in the holiday event or at any meeting.
“We need a reform of the modern Christmas,” G.K. Chesterton once wrote. “People have to rush about for a few weeks, if it is only to stay at home for a few hours,” he writes in his essay “The Spirit of Christmas.”
The essay, in which Chesterton calls Christians to bigger, better and more creative things than what the world rigidly offers, is one that the local G.K. Chesterton Society reviewed at its meeting in November.
The G.K. Chesterton Christmas will feature caroling, readings from Chesterton’s poems and other works about Christmas, Chestertonian suggestions for Christmas gifts, a drawing for a free membership to the national society, refreshments, information about local Chesterton events and about how you can join in the mirth — and a visit by “G.K.” himself.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton is one of the 20th-century’s greatest writers. A convert to the Catholic Church, he wrote nearly 100 books including novels, plays and poetry, and thousands of essays. His novels include the adventures of the priest detective Father Brown.
All the issues we struggle with in the 21st century Chesterton foresaw and wrote about, including social injustice, suicide and abortion, assaults on religion, and the disregard for man as a human being.
Refreshments will include a red velvet cake and red velvet brownies, I know (because I plan to bake them) and many other treats!
