Built in 1290, it was formerly the chapel of the London palace of the bishop of Ely and was lost to the Catholic Church at the Reformation before being bought by the Rosminians in 1874. It is beautifully preserved and oozes history. Its stained-glass windows are among the most beautiful in the city, and it has a collection of life-size statues of the many Catholic martyrs who once lived in the vicinity. It is within easy reach of the Ship Tavern, a pub where 18th-century Catholics secretly gathered to hear homilies by Bishop Richard Challoner. http://www.stetheldreda.comStephanie A. Its modern window dedicated to the martyrs of the Reformation is one of the best symbolic depictions of Imitatio Christi that I have ever seen.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8895518556533459607.post-24355787932622497742012-03-04T03:47:34.130-06:002012-03-04T03:47:34.130-06:00He might also have mentioned the Church of St Jame...He might also have mentioned the Church of St James Spanish Place, the home, traditionally, of London's Spanish community.
St James has an EF Mass every Sunday at 9.30am.
Thanks for this post, it is unusual for journalists such as Simon Caldwell to include a Catholic element in their work.Richard Collinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10826907710570316952noreply@blogger.com
